Preliminary paper #2
The investigation of the possible functionalities on the coming mobile phones
Today, telephone has played an integral part in our daily life. Through phones, people can easily reach others even though they are far distant from each other. This revolutionary technology was set up at the end of 19th century and has continuously enhanced its power and changed its shape with more new technologies added in. Especially, in the recent two decades, mobile phones have exhibited amazing and remarkable innovation on the functionality. In the beginning, mobile phone was just only a tool to talk. As time goes by, the functions of mobile phone are getting stronger. People can text messaging through mobile phones and take photos by an embedded digital camera as well.
Moreover, with bluetooth and wi-fi technologies included, people can access the Internet more easily to exchange data at a higher transmission speed and enjoy their wireless experience. Now the global positioning system (GPS) is also integrated with the mobile phone to enrich its connecting capability. The speed of cell phone evolution is dramatically fast. Today every new mobile phone is much lighter, but with more powerful functions on it. Especially after the announcement of Apple iPhone, I suddenly figured out that compared with twenty years ago, the mobile phone will become a promising life platform with which people would have a more convenient and richer life.
In this term project, I intend to investigate the potential functionalities of future phones. Based on emerging technologies and people’s needs, I am going to apply what I have learned in class to analyze the trend of its development. It’s very interesting to see what the future mobile phones would look alike, what functions they will provide, and, last but not least, how they are going to reshape our life. From my term project, I hope I can portray a much clear picture that help people predict and imagine what mobile phones you will have in the near future.

Preliminary Paper #1
The Future Phone
In 2004, I was working on the M-Taiwan program that was a national program conducted by Taiwan’s National Science Council. M-Taiwan means mobile Taiwan. The goal of my job was to promote wireless to universities and some institutes. In addition to help the deployment of wireless systems, our team was also dedicated to find attractive and valuable wireless applications, because we believed killer applications would be the key to stimulate the usage of wireless. I remember at that time we all used laptops as the wireless platform so we also focused on popularizing the use of laptop. Therefore we helped laptop companies promote their laptops in order to encourage people to use the Internet at any time and anywhere to reach the goal of M-Taiwan.
Just four years passed by, the mobile phone has become a promising wireless platform through which people can easily access the Internet, exchange data at a higher transmission speed and enjoy their wireless experience. The speed of cell phone evolution is dramatically fast. Today every new mobile phone is much lighter, but with more powerful functions on it. Especially after the announcement of Apple iPhone, I suddenly figured out that compared with the laptop, the mobile phone could provide us more opportunities to achieve the goal of M-Taiwan because of its easy portability, ever-increasing functions, awesome applications and services, and, most important of all, nonstop innovation.
In this them project, I will focus on the development of mobile phones and apply what we will learn in the class to analyzing the trend of wireless market. It’s very interesting to see what the future mobile phones would look alike, what functions and applications they will provide, and, last but not least, how they are going to reshape our life. From my term project, I hope I can portray a much clear picture that help people predict and imagine what the mobile life in the future would be.
